Older methods of communicating and sending information do still exist. Some people still have landline phones and others still send faxes. In this article, we will look at how to send a fax from your MacBook Pro if you ever have the need to do so.

What is Fax?

A fax is essentially a copy of an image or document made by scanning that is then transmitted in the form of data over telecommunication links. Fax machines were popular for a variety of purposes before the age of the internet.

By using one of these machines, you could send important documents and information much faster than ‘snail’ mail and it was a sign of the progress in communication that was to come.

A fax is sent by converting images or text information from a scanned document into bitmap format which can then be transmitted over the telephone system in the form of audio-frequency tones.

If you’ve ever seen a fax machine in action, you will no doubt recall the robotic modem sounds that are created when a fax is being received. Many businesses and organizations had fax machines as integral components to their daily operations.

Think of fax as like the original way to send an attachment, as we do with modern email. Although fax machines are not as common as they once were, they do still exist and it’s possible to send one over your computer if you have the correct hardware or software to do so.

Can My MacBook Pro Send Faxes?

The short answer to this is yes. Your MacBook Pro can indeed send a fax. But you might need to install software to do so unless you have a really old MacBook that has a built-in fax modem.

We will take a look at how to send a fax with any MacBook below but basically, if your computer has a standard phone input, it probably has the ability to send faxes. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to download software to have the ability to send a fax.

Sending an online fax on your Mac is easy. Today, we’re going to show you how to quickly and easily send an online fax using different services.

How Do You Want to Online Fax With Your Mac?

There are two ways to send a fax online using your Mac:

Method #1) Sign up for an online fax provider and send a fax using your email address and a standard web browser (like Safari or Chrome)

Method #2) Use the built-in fax function on Mac to send a fax through a phone line connected to your computer

The first method is the most-preferred method. There are dozens of great electronic fax providers that make it easy to send a fax via Mac. However, most of these fax providers charge a small fee, or require you to sign up to a monthly subscription in order to receive faxes.

The second method, on the other hand, is free (provided you have an active phone line). However, it doesn’t work on certain versions of Mac OS X. If you have the latest version of Mac OS X Mavericks, then you should be all right.

Online Fax Services for Mac

Depending on who you ask, there are three or four major email fax providers on the internet today.

These fax providers all make it easy to send and receive faxes using your Mac. These are the same services that let you send and receive faxes using your PC or mobile device.

Sending an virtual fax with the following providers is a lot like sending an email – so if your tablet, phone, desktop, or laptop has email functionality, then it should also have online fax functionality.

How to Send an Online Fax Over Mac

Using a Free Online Fax Website

Step 1) Pick an online fax provider from the businesses listed below. There are two popular free online fax services (MyFax and FaxZero) that let you send 1 or 2 fax pages for free just once – which can be the best solution if you don’t anticipate needing to send a fax again in the near future.

Step 2) Upload the file in a faxable format. For Mac, PDF is the most popular. It’s accepted by virtually every major online fax provider. Alternatively, you can fax Microsoft Word documents.

Step 3) Enter your recipient’s phone number and your own email address. There may also be additional boxes to enter your company name and full name, although these typically aren’t required.

Step 4) Attach a message to your fax number, if you like. This message is typically printed as a separate coverage page with your text written across the page.

Step 5) Once you’ve reviewed the information, click Send to send your fax to the recipient’s fax machine.

How are these online fax services free? Typically, they’re free because they’re supported by ads. Your recipient may receive an advertisement page on their fax machine, or there may be a big logo for the free faxing company on your faxed document. It’s not the most ideal solution for sending legal documents or applying for a job, but it will suit your needs if you need a fast free fax in a pinch on your Mac.

Popular free faxing services include:

  • MyFax.com: Fax for free to 40 countries around the world.
  • FaxZero.om: Fax for free to the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico (choose the advertisement that you wish to display on your fax)

These are the only two major free online fax providers. Alternatively, you may wish to sign up for a free trial with a paid fax provider like eFax, RingCentral, or some of the other providers listed below. These companies typically provide 7 day or 30 day free trials. In many cases, these free trials are full-featured and contain all of the same bells and whistles as an ordinary online fax account (like your own fax number, for example).

Using a Paid Service

Sending an online fax over Mac through a paid service is a little bit different. Here’s how it goes:

Step 1) Create the document that you wish to fax. Depending on your online fax provider, acceptable formats could just be .doc and .pdf. Some online fax providers, however, literally accept hundreds of different document types.

Step 2) Compose a new email using your standard email service (open Gmail on Safari, for example, just like you would if you were sending a normal email).

Step 3) In the To field, type in your recipient’s phone number followed by the website of your online fax service provider. It should look like this: [email protected] The first number is the 10 digit fax number of your recipient, while the “@ website” part is the website for your online fax provider. The specific address varies between online fax providers, so be sure to check with your online fax provider to make sure your fax gets through.

Step 4) Attach the document you’re trying to fax.

Step 5) Click Send. Your email will be sent to your online fax provider. That online fax provider will convert the attached document into a faxable format. Then, that fax will be forwarded to your recipient’s phone number. That’s it!

Step 3) Enter your recipient’s fax number by typing it into the To field. You can also select from your saved list of numbers by clicking the Contacts button to the right of the To field, where you then select a number.

Step 4) Some phone systems require you to dial an exit number to leave the internal network. If that’s the case, type that number into the Dialing Prefix field.

Step 5) You can include a cover page by selecting the Use cover page option. Then, enter your subject and message. It will appear on the cover page in standard text before the faxed document.

Step 6) You can change your options further by using the print options pop-up menu, which is the pop-up menu within a separator bar. You can use these settings to control how your modem behaves when faxing, for example. Just click Fax Modem. You can also choose whether to dial with touch tones or pulse tones, or whether you want to listen to the modem as it dials. You can ignore most of these settings if you like.

That fax will be sent as soon as your modem is available. If you’re currently using your modem to connect to the internet, then your fax will be sent after you disconnect from your ISP.

Your fax will feature a header section that includes the date and time the fax was sent along with a page number and the fax number of the sender (you).

A lot of companies have switched over from using fax machines to simply sending out faxes from their computers or their cell phones.

Part 1: CocoFax

CocoFax is an extremely reasonable online fax service, perhaps one of the most reasonable services in the market.

However, that reasonable nature is conditional. It’s ideal for companies that need to send out hundreds of faxes every month within domestic boundaries. However, it doesn’t fare so well when it comes to international faxing. In that case, you’ll be charged an additional 5 cents to $1 for every fax sent out.

The price plans in CocoFax are extremely flexible and offer a wide range of options. You can choose a package with which you can send out 1000 faxes a month.

The CocoFax app for Mac is very user-friendly and it can help you send multiple faxes. You can also manage contacts with it or integrate it with Outlook so that you can receive all faxes directly to your mailbox. You also have the option of sending faxes either directly from the online account or from your mailbox.

ProsCons
Contact management is easy.Expensive.
Send up to 1000 faxes per month
Easy integration with Outlook, Dropbox, etc.
Can send unlimited faxes a month.
24/7 customer support.

Part 2: eFax

eFax is the ideal option for businesses that need to send faxes to international recipients on a regular basis. It’s one of the few apps in the market in which you can send out international faxes without a surcharge. That’s one of the main reasons for its popularity.

However, the ability to send out international faxes comes at a high price point, and it also leads to a decreased number of faxes being sent out. Whereas its competitors can let you send at least 400 or 500 faxes a month, eFax lets you send out a maximum of 200 faxes a month without surcharge.

eFax comes with a trial period of 30 days. Once that’s over, it becomes the most expensive fax app in the market.

The eFax app for Mac allows you to efficiently manage all your faxes. You can send faxes through the online account or from your email directly. Both of these methods are pretty simple. If you want to send faxes from the online account, you have to simply go to the online account and click on ‘Send Faxes’. If you want to send a fax from your email, you just have to enter the fax number in the address bar and suffice it with “@efaxsend.com”.

eFax also comes with some great features with which you can forward faxes to several recipients and you can also add digital signatures to your documents.

ProsCons
Easy management of faxes.Expensive.
International faxing with no surcharge.Only 200 faxes a month possible.

Part 3: iFax

iFax is an online fax service available in 17 countries across the globe, and faxing between those countries is free from surcharges. iFax was designed to provide simplicity and ease of use. Sending faxes from this app is like sending an email, a few taps and you’re done.

One of the major issues with iFax is that it only provides a short 7-day trial period whereas many of its competitors provide a trial period of 30 days.

You also get to choose from a set of templates for the cover letter and modify it according to your needs. Furthermore, you can also add a brand logo or a digital signature to your documents. All of these features make iFax one of the most feature-rich mac fax apps in the market.

Furthermore, iFax also supports all the major file formats, in addition to the popular ones such as PDF and TIFF.

iFax payment works on a credit system. In the chart below you can check out the pricing breakdown.

Best Fax App For Macbook

ProsCons
Powerful features.Only a 7-day trial available.
Intuitive UI.Expensive.
Wide range of file formats available.

Part 4: FaxDocument

FaxDocument is an extremely efficient means of faxing documents to any of the countries that are supported in the application without any surcharge. The app supports 39 countries around the world, and you can send faxes to these countries easily.

Unlike other fax seeing services mentioned above, the FaxDocument Mac App allows you to purchase packages of faxes rather than monthly packages. As such, you can buy a package of 50 faxes for $29.99 or a package of 25 faxes for $19.99.

Once you’ve bought the package, you can simply send out the faxes to all the necessary recipients. You can also add a cover page along with your documents. There are several other features that you can avail of. For example, you get a complete fax log of all the faxes sent out, and you can also modify the cover letter template.

However, if you compare this to the other services, you’ll find that FaxDocument is a lot more expensive than its competitors. Furthermore, beside the bare essentials of sending and receiving faxes, it doesn’t have a lot of advanced features such as adding digital signatures, etc.

ProsCons
Simple to use.Expensive.
Efficiency.Lack of features.

Part 5: FaxFresh

FaxFresh is a similar free fax app for mac with which you can send out faxes anywhere at all. Cyber 8000 pci serial port drivers. The process of using FaxFresh is extremely simple as well. It can be completed in a 4 step process:

Mac
  1. Upload the PDF of the documents you want to send and enter the recipient’s fax number along with country code.
  2. Make the requisite payment through an online gateway.
  3. Send the fax on it’s way.
  4. You’ll receive a confirmation message that your fax has been delivered.

With this process you need to only pay when you have to send out a fax and you don’t need to worry about any subscriptions. The cost of a single fax is 25¢ per page, though you have to send faxes worth at least $1.99 for every transaction.

This is pretty expensive and not a great option for companies that need to send large quantities of faxes on a regular basis. However, if you’re an individual in need of sending faxes only occasionally, this is a great option for you.
You can use the FaxFresh Mac App to render the process even smoother and better. It’s currently only available in 100 regions such as Europe, Japan, Australia, the US, etc.

ProsCons
Pay as you go.Lack of features.
